Holiday Pet Hazards
The holidays bring with it many potential hazards for your pet. Follow these simple rules to avoid any unexpected trips to the vet!
1. Keep Holiday Decorations Out of Reach
While these decorations are beautiful and festive, they can create major problems for your pet. Keep all glass, metal, tinsel, ribbons, and artificial snow far out of your pet's reach to avoid an unintentional ingestion.
2. Beware of Cold Weather
Frost bite is not a condition limited to humans. Don't allow your pets to be outside for extended periods of time during extreme cold weather. If frostbite is suspected, seek medical attenton immediately.
3. Hazardous Chemicals
Antifreeze and salt are two commonly used products during the winter months. Antifreeze even in very small amounts can cause life-threatening kidney failure. It also has a very sweet flavor which attracts pets so be sure to keep it far away from their reach. Be sure to wipe your pet's feet after coming in from outside and walks to be sure that any salt that could have gotten between his toe pads is wiped away.
4. Keep Table Scraps On The Table
Many foods fit for a feast are too fatty and rich for our favorite companions to handle. Foods high in fat (Turkey trimmings or skin, gravy, stuffing, etc), can cause a life-threatening illness called Pancreatitis. Cooked bones can splinter and cause severe illness possibly requiring surgery. Do your pets a favor and keep all human food on the dinner table and away from their bowl.
5. ID Your Pets
The flow of holiday guests provides an open door for escape. Be sure your pet is microchipped and has current ID tags. If you are intrested in microchipping, please contact our clinic. It only takes a few moments!
6. Place Holiday Plants Off The Ground
Holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, lillies, and Christmas Tree Water can all be toxic if ingeseted. Keep them far out of your pet's reach to avoid any problems.
